My conservation internship with BIOSEAN My name is Nadja Hohenadl (@nadja_oceana), I am a marine science student from Scotland (SAMS), born in Germany. I did my conservation internship with BIOSEAN between September & October 2020, in Las Galletas, Tenerife, Spain. Before the Internship I heard of BIOSEAN (@biosean_) via a German friend and simply sent an email to them as an initial application for an internship. With contact information online it was easy to get in touch so that shortly after I had a telephone call with Misael (@misael.morales.vargas), the boss, who introduced me to their concepts and we came up with a time period I could spend with BIOSEAN. COVID-19 Safety Measures Following the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the Spanish government during the state of alarm, we assure COVID-19 safety measures, providing our guests with sanitizer and we recommend the use of a mask at least during our stay at the port or if the boat is standing still and there is no wind. Amid the current Covid-19 crisis, BIOSEAN ceased all tours and surveys in compliance with the Spanish government’s lockdown guidelines and for the safety of our guests and team members. Whale watching and the weather In southern Tenerife, whale watching and weather always go together. Like many other outdoor activities, the tour can be affected according to weather conditions. A comfortable and of quality whale watching excursion always goes along with previous meteorological analysis. Every day we go out to sea with two main objectives: to collect scientific data from our whale watching tours, and to show our clients the wonders of southern Tenerife, with an educational approach, respect for local fauna, conservation, and dissemination of the marine ecosystem. Our research is largely funded through whale watching tours, but we also receive research funds through agreements signed with universities and research centers. These studies allow us to understand marine fauna, and especially cetaceans, thus having useful tools to propose management, conservation and dissemination measures for the marine environment.
