Whale Watching and Marine Sciences

Table of contents

BIOSEAN is a project that combines whale watching and marine sciences in Tenerife, through the participation of citizens (citizen science), students and researchers. Every day we head out to sea with two main goals: to collect scientific data from our whale watching trips, and to show our clients the wonders of southern Tenerife, with an educational approach grounded in respect for local wildlife, conservation and outreach of the marine ecosystem. Our research is largely funded through whale watching tours, but we also receive research funding through agreements signed with universities and research centres. These studies allow us to better understand marine wildlife, and cetaceans in particular, providing us with useful tools to propose management, conservation and outreach measures for the marine environment.

During our whale watching and marine science trips, participants have the opportunity to observe local wildlife, listen to it through our hydrophone, and understand it through the explanations of our marine biologist. At the same time, they become part of a research team, assisting in data collection. Likewise, researchers use our vessel and equipment as a platform to carry out their scientific projects. University students also travel to Tenerife to develop their final degree projects with us.

We also offer internships and volunteering opportunities for students and nature enthusiasts who wish to gain professional experience. Because we love our sea, we also help with ocean clean-up efforts. We systematically collect plastics and other solid waste along our routes.

For primary and secondary school students, BIOSEAN is an opportunity to get up close with these incredible animals, experiencing in an educational way the adventure of spotting whales, dolphins, seabirds and sea turtles, fostering learning, teamwork, responsibility, love and respect for nature.

For those who want more than just whale watching and marine sciences, we also offer diving and snorkelling trips. Keeping the same approach, we identify the species spotted, discuss their biology, ecology and evolution. We offer a far richer experience of adventure and understanding of the marine environment.

Our boat. A floating scientific laboratory.

BIOSEAN operates a semi-rigid inflatable vessel. It is 8 metres long with capacity for 12 people. It is fully adapted and equipped for fieldwork. It is an ideal, lightweight, versatile and comfortable boat that allows participants an intimate, direct and respectful encounter with local wildlife.
