Whale Watching Marine Science

Whale watching and marine Science
A participant helping out on data collection.

BIOSEAN is a project that combines whale watching and marine sciences in Tenerife, through the participation of people (citizen science), students and researchers. Every day we go out to sea with two main objectives: to collect scientific data from our whale watching tours, and to show our clients the wonders of southern Tenerife, with an educational approach, respect for local fauna, conservation, and dissemination of the marine ecosystem. Our research is largely funded through whale watching tours, but we also receive research funds through agreements signed with universities and research centers. These studies allow us to understand marine fauna, and especially cetaceans, thus having useful tools to propose management, conservation and dissemination measures for the marine environment.

During our whale watching and marine science tours, our participants have the opportunity to see the local fauna, listen to it through our hydrophone, and understand it through the explanations of our marine biologist. On top of that, they are part of a research team assisting in data collection. Similarly, researchers use our boat and equipment as a platform to develop their scientific projects. Also, University students come to Tenerife, to develop their end of career projects with us.

We additionally offer internships and volunteering programs for those students and nature enthusiasts, who wish to gain professional experience. Because we love our sea, we also help with the cleaning of the ocean. We systematically collect plastics and other solid waste during our routes.

For elementary and middle school students, BIOSEAN is are an opportunity to approach these incredible animals, experiencing in an educational way the adventure of seeing whales, dolphins, birds and sea turtles, thus promoting learning, teamwork, responsibility, love, and respect for nature.

For those who are not satisfied with only whale watching and marine sciences in Tenerife, we also offer diving and snorkeling trips. Maintaining the same approach, therefore, we identify the species seen, we talk about their biology, ecology, and evolution. We offer a much wider experience of adventure and understanding of the marine environment.

Our boat. A floating scientific laboratory.

Our vessel is a Rigid inflatable boat (RIB) of 8 meters in length and with a capacity for 12 people. The boat is adapted and equipped with everything necessary for fieldwork. It is an ideal, light, versatile and comfortable boat that allows the participants an intimate, direct and respectful encounter with the local fauna.
